‘There’s no need for a female James Bond’, says Ana de Armas

Daniel Craig made a very similar point following the release of his final outing as the iconic spy

As the question of who’ll be cast as the new 007 lingers and people continue to ponder whether casting should deviate from tradition, No Time To Die actor Ana de Armas has suggested that “there’s no need for a female Bond.

The 34-year-old actor who appeared in Daniel Craig‘s final outing as the super spy in 2021 says that writing better roles for women in the franchise is more important than a potential female equivalent.

While co-star Lashana Lynch insists that the next Bond “could be a man or a woman”, Armas told The Sun in an exclusive: “There’s no need for a female Bond. There shouldn’t be any need to steal someone else’s character, you know, to take over.

She goes on to say that she hopes “female roles in the Bond films, even though Bond will continue to be a man [Producer Barbara Broccoli has been clear about that for years] are brought to life in a different way.”

Her comments very much echo sentiments made by Craig, who said following the release of his last outing that “there should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour“, and posing the question: “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

The Blade Runner: 2049 and Knives Out star (the latter of which saw her once again star alongside Craig) says it’s important “that [female actors are] given a more substantial part and recognition. That’s what I think is more interesting than flipping things.”

Elsewhere, the Craig era’s Q, Ben Wishaw said he wants a gay actor to play 007 at some point in the future, remarking that it would be a testament to the “real progress” the franchise has made in recent years

Armas, who is soon to don the iconic white dress as Marilyn Monroe for Netflix’s first adult-only movie, is currently starring in the Bond-esque spy thriller The Gray Man and plays a character very similar to the one she portrayed in No Time To Die.
