The trailer for one of the most eagerly anticipated TV shows of 2017 looks exceptional

Paul Moore

Chilling, topical and beautiful. This could be a massive hit.

Given the recent changes to the global political climate, there are times when the lines between reality and fiction have become incredibly blurred.

Given the current state of things, the adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s iconic dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, couldn’t be released at a better time.

Right, what’s it about?

The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States.

Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’.

As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Imagine a mix of 1984, The Hunger Games and Children Of Men.

The Handmaid’s Tale is being released on Hulu in the US, but we would be amazed if it didn’t find a broadcaster in the UK and Ireland.

This trailer looks great.
