The superb Master of None will be returning to Netflix in May

Paul Moore

If you’re not watching it, start now.

Given that we’re living in an era where the world’s most popular comedies are supplied with canned laughter and generic gags, the excellent first season of Master of None felt like it was the direct antithesis to this ‘dumbing down’ of TV.

What separated Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang’s Golden Globe-nominated show from anything else was the fact that it had its finger on the pulse of what was going on for people in their late 20s and early 30s.

Master of None preferred to be perceptive and observational about how the world works as opposed to seeing things through a prism of one-dimensional characters, hackneyed writing and laugh tracks.

The first season is currently available on Netflix and it’s a joy to behold.

In case you’re not familiar with it, the show is almost like a rom-com for the millenial generation, taking a look at everything from relationships to the pitfalls of getting older.

Every episode deals with a specific theme – infidelity, old age, racism and the joys/perils of living with your partner are all examined – but the show was always funny while refusing to descend into the realms of cliche.

Ansari had already promised us a second season and we know what we’re going to be watching on May 12th.
