Together at last

Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in Heat. Superman and Batman. King Kong and Godzilla. Some team-ups just seem destined to happen. Written in the stars. And here’s another one: Sir David Attenborough is going to team up with Dave for a special episode of Planet Earth.

Yeah, so the great BBC documentarian and the Mercury Prize-winning rapper might not seem like an obvious crossover. But stranger things have happened. Maybe.

BBC One has announced the duo are collaborating for Planet Earth: A Celebration, which is described as “a visual and musical feast designed to lift viewers’ spirits during a time of international uncertainty.”

The episode will be made up of footage from “eight of the most extraordinary sequences from the Bafta award-winning Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II.”

The BBC release continues to say that David Attenborough “has recorded a new narration for the programme. We’ll travel around the world, from the East Cape of South Africa to the north of Norway, from Chile to the Indian Ocean, to see how animals overcome adversity to survive and thrive in some of the world’s most challenging environments – offering a message of hope to humanity.”

The show will also feature new music by award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, the man behind the scores for blockbusters like The Dark Knight, Gladiator and Inception.

But where does Dave fit in? According to the BBC, “The string section of the score is performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, accompanied by UK rapper Dave, who will be featured performing on the grand piano.”

In the press release, Dave says: “I’ve always been a fan of powerful natural history documentaries. This is a programme where nature and music come together, so it was only right that I lent my talent, my time, and my attention to this project. It was a pleasure to work alongside Sir David Attenborough and Hans Zimmer.”

Planet Earth: A Celebration does not yet have an air date.
