One of 2024’s best hidden gem movies is now available to stream at home

Stephen Porzio

The comedy has earned comparisons to Superbad.

Snack Shack, the acclaimed 2024 comedy movie, is now available to watch at home via NOW Cinema and Sky Cinema.

Written and directed by Adam Rehmeier (Dinner in America), the film is a semi-autobiographical story based off the filmmaker’s experiences as a teenager in Nebraska City.

Set in the summer of 1991 in the area, the movie follows two inseparable teen best friends named AJ (Conor Sherry, The Terminal List) and Moose (Gabriel LaBelle, The Fabelmans) who seize the opportunity to run the local pool’s rundown snack shack.

This is after their plan to gamble on dog races and sell home-brewed beer goes down the drain.

“Dreaming of striking it rich, things take an unexpected turn when they meet summer visitor Brooke (Mika Abdalla, The Flash), an effortlessly cool lifeguard who puts their big summer plans, and their friendship, at risk,” the plot synopsis reads.

Snack Shack earned acclaim for its period setting, performances and dialogue upon its US release last Spring, with some critics even comparing it to other classic coming-of-age films like Dazed and Confused, Lady Bird and Superbad.

You can read a sample of some of the glowing reviews right here:

Flickering Myth: “A lively and fittingly crass coming-of-age story with a great deal of feeling, truthfulness, and period specificity.”

New York Times: “With its rambling momentum and quick-witted, almost musical dialogue, it feels less like “Superbad” than a Robert Altman movie, sort of like a pint-size California Split.”

Paste Magazine: “The enthusiasm is infectious, and for its energetic first half especially, the movie feels antic in the best way.”

Radio Times: “The naturalistic chemistry between the leads shines through to keep viewers rooting for the likeable youngsters to come out on top.”

Variety: “Armed with a talented cast, writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s 1991-set feature happily squares itself in a tradition of teenage hedonism and broad learning opportunities, settling into a generic but warm glow.”

Snack Shack is available to watch now in the UK and Ireland through NOW Cinema and Sky Cinema.
