Robert De Niro’s new HBO drama looks absolutely excellent

Paul Moore

The director of Sleepers tells the story of the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.

When it comes to Robert De Niro’s recent roles, it’s fair to say that the Oscar-winner has been less ‘consistent’ when it comes to the quality of work. Granted, actors like De Niro, Pacino or Nicholson will always be judged a little bit harsher given the extraordinary work that they’ve previously produced, but we’re confident in saying that The Wizard of Lies will be one of his more memorable recent roles.

In 2008, stockbroker, investment advisor and financier Bernie Madoff made headlines around the world when he was arrested for perpetrating perhaps the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.

The Wizard of Lies will examine Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight.

Golden Globe winner Michelle Pfeiffer also stars as Ruth Madoff, Bernie’s longtime spouse and unwitting partner during the events that would lead to financial ruin for countless people and institutions, as well as his and his family’s destruction.

The film is directed by Barry Levinson (Sleepers, Rain Man, Good Morning, Vietnam) and it airs in the US on May 20th.
