An accomplished performer of both stage and screen, he is perhaps most well known to younger viewers as Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones. He appeared in seasons 1, 3, 4 and 5 of the HBO franchise.
But older viewers will recall his memorable role as Harry Grout, or 'Grouty', in classic BBC sitcom, Porridge. Starring alongside Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale, Vaughan played the inmate with menacing aplomb.
