Rose Matefeo comedy starstruck has been added to Netflix

Both seasons of Starstruck are available to watch now on the streamer

Netflix has just added Starstruck, the acclaimed series from comedian Rose Matafeo, to its UK library.

Created by and starring Matafeo, she plays Jessie – a 20-something New Zealand woman living in Hackney in London and juggling two dead-end jobs.

Her life suddenly becomes more complicated though when she realises that the man (Nikesh Patel) she had a one-night stand with on New Year’s Eve is actually a famous movie star.

Starstruck’s six-episode first season premiered on BBC One in 2021, with a second six-episode season being released a year later.

Both seasons received rave reviews from critics, with the show currently holding a 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Matafeo’s sharp, witty writing and the performances of both her and Patel were singled out for particular praise.

The Evening Standard labelled the first series a contender for “comedy of the year” in 2021, saying that along with the “sharp and quick-witted” writing, Starstruck can “also be warm and cosy, without slipping into sentimentality or cliches.”

Time named it in its list of the 10 Best TV Rom-coms of the Streaming Era, writing: “It’s a premise straight out of fanfiction, but creator and star Rose Matafeo steers it confidently, and entertainingly, out of the realm of fantasy.”

Meanwhile, the Times said: “It is a rare one who can make it funny and fresh when Phoebe Waller-Bridge has pretty much smashed this territory and parked her tanks on it. However, Rose Matafeo in Starstruck managed it, and with ease.”

And the series received praise in the US as well, with the Washington Post saying: “Starstruck often feels like a one-woman show, with a much greater emphasis on the com than the rom, but Matafeo and the dryly funny Patel share the kind of relaxed, banter-y chemistry that makes or breaks shows like this one.”

Also featuring amongst its supporting cast Minnie Driver, Russell Tovey and Sindhu Vee and already renewed for third season, each episode of Starstruck is only about 20 minutes long – making it an easy binge-watch.

The show’s two seasons to date are streaming on Netflix in the UK and Ireland right now, with all episodes also available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
