OFFICIAL: Season 2 of Derry Girls is now filming

The Derry Girls are back

After the brilliantly bittersweet ending to Season 1 of Lisa McGee’s award-winning comedy, Derry Girls fans were just itching for even more episodes and we’re now smirking even more than ‘Big M’ because Season 2 has officially started production.

After a week of rehearsals, the cameras have finally started rolling on the smash hit comedy and the good news doesn’t stop there because as stated previously, even more seasons are coming.

During a recent chat with Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Michelle), we asked her about the possibility of stretching out the amount of episodes per season of the hit show – the first season of Derry Girls had six episodes – because the demand is clearly there for more episodes.

“With Derry Girls, because it’s so quick and the jokes just arrive one after another, a half an hour is the perfect time. I know people would like an hour but with the quickness of the jokes, I think half an hour is the ideal time. With regards to more episodes per season, I think that’s more up to Channel 4,” she said.

We shall wait and see.

With regards to the potential plotlines for Season 2, there have been plenty of ideas suggested and hinted at. For example, Nadine Coyle’s rumoured cameo would be very cool to see, Bill Clinton’s trip to Foyleside has been mentioned, and Lisa McGee previously suggested that she might include the ceasefire for dramatic weight in Season 2.

We can all agree that one of the highlights from Season 1 was Michelle’s withering put downs of her English cousin James, but the actress would like to see a small rapprochement between the two characters in the new episodes.

“We’ll never be cool. We’re sort of the losers,” O’Donnell says.

“I like to think of my character as the cool one – but it’s the best of a bad bunch. I think we need to get a love interest for Clare and to see Michelle stand up for James a wee bit more. They have all got his back and they’re there for him but they’re just doing it in that really weird Irish way where your best friends are the ones you take the mickey out of the most. We’re just trying to toughen him up a bit.”

Well, whatever direction the new season might take, we’re definitely on board to see what develops.
