Here are the 8 best movies on TV today

Rory Cashin

A handful of films to help you survive your hangover.

Another day of World Cup matches, another day of sunshine, and another day of great cinema to choose from. So many things vying for your attention.

But if none of that is appealing to you today, then there are some great flicks to pick from on the TV this evening:

SUNDAY 1 JULY

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – ITV2 – 5.45pm

Is it as good as The Lord Of The Rings movies? No. But it is still an awful lot of fun, and Martin Freeman and Ian McKellan are both fantastic in the roles that will kick off that entire saga.

The River Wild – Film 4 – 6.50pm

Meryl Streep is taking her kids for a trip down a river, when their raft is hijacked by a group of dangerous criminals, headed by Kevin Bacon. Some real old-school thrills.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes – E4 – 7.00pm

A fantastic look at how things went from “normal”, with humans the primary species on the planet, before James Franco and co. accidentally release a virus that will give apes the leg up.

Ace Venture: Pet Detective – Comedy Central – 7.15pm

“Alllllllllllllllllllllllllllrighty then!”

The Proposal – Universal TV – 9.00pm

Sandra Bullock is the narky boss who might be deported back to Canada if she can’t get married in a hurry, and Ryan Reynolds is her assistant that she blackmails to pose as her fiance, despite the fact that they hate each other. It being a rom-com, you can see where this is going, but it is still fun to see how it gets there.

Sicario – Film 4 – 9.00pm

The sequel is in cinemas now (read our thoughts on it right here), but we really recommend you check out the original first, with Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin caught up in the middle of a huge cartel drug war.

The Guard – Film 4- 11.20pm

Brendan Gleeson is a comedic force of nature in this tar-black comedy about an Irish police office forced to partner with an American agent (Don Cheadle) to take down a group of drug dealers. Even if you’ve seen it a thousand times, you’ll probably still want to watch it again.

Alien – Channel 4 – 11.20pm

One of the greatest horrors of all time, with Sigourney Weaver essentially stuck in a haunted house… that happens to be in space.
