Man United’s latest movie trailer has prompted a familiar reaction from fans

Not for the first time in recent months, Manchester United are using their considerable global reach to help promote a new Hollywood film.

Having mistakenly believed that the bizarre penalty shootout scene that was used to promote Deadpool was a one off, we’ve seen United’s players star in some equally cringeworthy trailers in the time since. For example, who can forget this one, for Independence Day 2?

Or this one, for X-Men: Apocalypse?

Now though, we’re excited to tell you that they’ve gone and done it again.

To help boost the new Assassin’s Creed movie, United’s Twitter account have sent out their latest promotional video.

Disappointingly, there’s not a hint of Wayne Rooney acting to be seen this time around. Instead, playing on the line ‘History is in our blood’,  the minute and a half long clip consists of a mashup of footage of United stars past and present interspersed with clips of Michael Fassbender and his co-stars in the new film.

Stirring music accompanies this, with a narrator reeling off a few lines that are supposed to represent both the United players and the storyline of the new film.

Have a watch:

While United’s latest venture into the world of movie trailers is very different to the ones we’ve seen before, the reaction to it from their supporters is exactly the same.

Some took exception with the tweet, which accompanied the video.

Others thought the latest video warranted drastic measures…

There were also plenty who found the link a strange one…

Although if we’re being completely honest, it’s probably not as far-fetched as the idea of United’s first team squad being recruited to see off an alien invasion.

Still, at least ‘hashtagFreeMartial’ here thought it was a step in the right direction.
