JOE spoke to the trio about their beloved movie on the IFTA red carpet last night.
Irish-language hip-hop trio Kneecap have said they would be open to a sequel to their IFTA award-winning comedy-drama movie.
The film was nominated for a whopping 17 awards at the Irish Oscars and wound up taking home four during the ceremony last night (14 February), in the best director, best casting, best costume design and best editing categories.
JOE spoke to the group on the red carpet about the movie and about the band recently winning its high-profile discrimination case against the UK Government.
Last year, the Belfast-based band said it would launch legal proceedings after the British Government confirmed it had blocked the trio from receiving music funding.
Responding to Kneecap’s claims at the time, a spokesperson for then UK Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said: “We fully support freedom of speech, but it’s hardly surprising that we don’t want to hand out UK taxpayers’ money to people that oppose the United Kingdom itself.”
Since people love a courtroom drama, we asked the group’s member DJ Próvai if Kneecap would ever consider a sequel or some sort of follow-up about the band’s continuing adventures.
To this, he replied: “Oh aye. If the money’s right and if the British Government keep putting their foot in it and we just keep taking their money off them, it’ll give us more chances to make more films.”
Referencing Badenoch, he added: “So Kemi, keep up the good work.”
Considering how each member of Kneecap was nominated for best actor at IFTAs, we asked DJ Próvai if he will continue acting.
“If we get enough time. We’re very busy boys with our music. But if The Godfather 4 comes along who knows,” he joked.
Cillian Murphy ended up winning in the Best Actor category for his drama Small Things Like These (which also won the best Irish film award) over Kneecap bandmates DJ Próvai, Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap.
Ahead of the ceremony though, the band said they were not being competitive against each other and that if one of them were to win, they were going to share the award.
“I get it at weekends,” Mo Chara joked to JOE.
The trio also poked fun at their competitors, with Móglaí Bap saying: “Surely Cillian’s had enough awards. He’ll let us have it.
“Apparently Gladiator didn’t do too good. It might not be that there.”
DJ Próvai then added: “If Gladiator wins, I’m going to take up a f*****g sword.”
