It’s all in the hips

It really is the season of returns and comebacks. We’ve had Oasis, Linkin Park, a Harry Potter TV series and countless more.

Now to add to this trend, one of the greatest sporting films ever is making a comeback with a much anticipated sequel to the cult classic Adam Sandler film, Happy Gilmore.

The original starred Adam Sandler as the self-titled Happy Gilmore with Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, and the late Carl Weathers as Chubbs Peterson.

The film follows Sandler as an unsuccessful hockey player who becomes an unlikely golf sensation, thanks to his massive drives.

Now it’s been confirmed that both Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald will be reprising their iconic roles in the film.

It was announced this week that the sequel would be made for Netflix who took to their X account to announce the news that the film had started filming.

“Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in production,” the post said on Monday.

Kyle Newacheck will produce the movie based off a script by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy.

Taking to Instagram on Monday on his 58th birthday, Sandler said, “It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’ve only just begun,” playing on a line from the film.

Little detail has been given about the sequel other than the prospective cast which is said to include a cameo from American Football star Travis Kelce with Benny Safdie having a role too.

The first rumour of a second Happy Gilmore film came from Christopher McDonald who let slip in an interview at the start of the year that a script was in the works.

Two months after that in May, Netflix made the news official with a social media post reading, “Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix.”

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sandler talked about the excitement around reprising his legendary character.

He said: “The idea that me and my buddy Tim Herlihy had, and the more we talked about it and scene to scene worked on it, it built, and we feel very strong about the movie itself.

“We’re happy where it’s at and this is an exciting time for us. I don’t know how all of a sudden our brains said, ‘Let’s do that.’ It just kind of happened.”
