Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s trial has been turned into a movie and the trailer is amazing

People have praised Mark Hapka for nailing Depp’s tone of voice

Just months after a jury delivered a verdict in the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard‘s defamation trial, the courtroom drama has been made into a movie.

The six-week trial ended in Depp’s favour on June 1, with a jury in Fairfax County, Virginia, ruling that Heard defamed Depp by publishing a piece about being a sexual assault survivor in the Washington Post. Depp was awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. The punitive damages amount was later reduced to $350,000 in keeping with Virginia law. Heard, the juror found, was also defamed, and was awarded $2m.

The trailer for Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial landed on YouTube on Wednesday.

The first comment reads: “The only hot take here is the fact I’d rather re-watch six weeks of free, raw court footage than any money-milking, dramatised college project.”

The synopsis for the Tubi original says the movie is “based on the controversial defamation trial that shook the world”.

It stars Mark Hapka (Parallels) as Depp, Megan Davis (Alone in the Dark) as Heard, Melissa Marty (Station 19) as Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez and Mary Carrig (Law & Order True Crime) joins as Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft.

Judging from the trailer, we’ll be getting some brilliant retelling of the trial’s biggest moments in the Virginia courtroom as well as some dramatised scenes of Johnny and Amber when they were alone.

Other commenter on YouTube wrote: “The movie nobody thought they needed and… they’d be right.”

A third wrote: “This trial is barely half a year old and here we are with a full length movie.”

However, some have Hapka for nailing Depp’s tone of voice.

The jury is still out on whether Davis will get the same commendation.

Depp had sued his ex-wife for $50 million (£38.2 million) and she had made a counterclaim for $100m.

The trailer comes as reports suggest Depp is now dating one of the attorneys from his UK libel case, Joelle Rich.

According to People, sources have said: “They are dating but it’s not serious.”

Rich should not be confused for his most recent lawyer, Vasquez, reports falsely linked him with romantically.
