“Guys, let’s be adults in the room for a second.”
James Bond is known to be a notorious womaniser, with the role of the Bond girl being one of the most cult castings of the modern day.
However, has anyone ever thought that James Bond might actually be gay?
That’s a possibility that the director of Daniel Craig’s new film Queer brought up during a recent press conference.
The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, follows the story of William S. Burroughs’ novel about an outcast American living in Mexico City who becomes infatuated with a younger man.
Also starring Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman, the A24 production premiered this week at Venice Film Festival.
In a press conference at the festival, Guadagnino was quizzed about Craig’s casting, and whether he thought his iconic Bond character could be gay.
“Guys, let’s be adults in the room for a second,” he began, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“There is no way around the fact that nobody would ever know what James Bond desires, period. The important thing is that he does his missions properly.”
He went on to praise the actor: “I have been an admirer of this gentleman for a long time. A gentleman that was in the [casting] room was really the one that was not pragmatic and said to me, ‘What about Daniel Craig?’ And I said, ‘I thought about him, but he’s never going to say yes.’
“And he said to me, ‘Let’s ask.’ And he said yes. And the yes was a definitive yes, he’s one of the greatest actors. It’s a privilege to work with someone like him.”

Guadagnino’s comments come as speculation is rife as to who the next actor to play 007 will be.
Earlier this year, it was reported that bosses were ready to formally offer the role to Kick-Ass actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
“Bond is Aaron’s job, should he wish to accept it. The formal offer is on the table and they are waiting to hear back,” a source told The Sun.
“As far as Eon is concerned, Aaron is going to sign his contract in the coming days and they can start preparing for the big announcement.”
However, a production insider on the James Bond team later told the BBC that there is “no truth in the rumours”.
