“Do something different with it. Why not?”

As always, Idris Elba is a very busy man. Aside from shooting the new season of Luther, the actor is also promoting his directorial debut, Yardie.

The star of The Wire and The Dark Tower was recently speaking with Variety and the topic of Bond came up. Over the last few years, Elba has been consistently linked with the role with many believing that he’d make the perfect 007.

When asked if he’d like to play the character, Elba said: “Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male? Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have — do something different with it, why not?”

The next Bond film, the 25th in the series, is due out in November 2019 and Daniel Craig will be returning. As for the director, that hasn’t been announced yet but Christopher Nolan has previously said that he’s definitely interested in directing a Bond film.

When Craig decides not to renew his license to kill, Tom Hardy’s name has also been mentioned for the role. the star of Dunkirk and The Dark Knight Rises has previously said that he’d be happy to play Bond in a film that’s directed by Nolan.

Whatever happens, it’s clear that there’s going to be a new James Bond after the next film.

Here are Elba’s comments in full.
