Great news because Idris Elba has suggested that Luther could be 'a series of films'

Season 5 of Luther is also coming.

Given the fact that the remarkably busy - and remarkably cool - Idris Elba is a hard man to pin down, we're incredibly happy with the recent news that DCI John Luther (LOOOFAH!) will be returning to our screens.

In his Golden Globe-winning role as the brilliant yet unhinged detective, Elba has done battle with murderers, kidnappers, deviants, occult mysteries, serial killers and worse, but it appears that the new four-part series might not be the last time that we see the famous trenchcoat on screen.

Speaking with the Radio Times, Elba has said that the idea of making Luther into a film has "taken on some different legs, but it definitely feels like it would be magnified more – open Luther in terms of what he can do, on a film scale.I think it could be an amazing series of films."

Granted, we've heard the idea of a Luther film being mentioned before, but now that the show has started to gather some real clout and momentum around the world, a film adaptation very well could happen.

It also helps that Elba is a magnificent actor and effortlessly cool.

As for Season 5, writer Neil Cross has already teased us by saying: “Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business. The thing is, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question. Because we love John and wonder what he’s up to. And as for me, I’m scared of the monsters. The face at the window. The hand under the bed. The shadow at the end of the street. Who’s going to stop them, if not John Luther?

He adds: "In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to find out what happens next. Now what? Luther’s coming back. That’s what.”

Speaking about what fans can expect from the new episodes, Elba said: "There's no point trying to make something unfamiliar. We're not reinventing the wheel. There is unfinished business, but there's also more Luther. There's more of that really complex character that I love to play."

We can't wait.

If the creators of Season 5 of the superb TV show are happy to leave us on a cliffhanger and then make a few films, we're not going to say no.

Make. It. Happen!
