Iconic 1986 film Labyrinth set for sequel

Ryan Price

A follow-up to the David Bowie fantasy flick has been rumoured for years.

A sequel to the 1986 cult-classic film Labyrinth is reportedly in the works, with one of Hollywood’s most exciting directorial talents set to make it.

According to Variety, Robert Eggers (Nosferatu, The Lighthouse) will write and direct the film while Home Alone director Chris Columbus is lined up to produce.

The original film starred David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as teenager Sarah Williams.

It has never had a sequel or a remake, but speculation has been rife for many years.

The imaginative musical fantasy bombed at the box office, but it found a generation of fans on home video and television and became a beloved cult movie.

Its devoted fandom led to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, retrospective screenings and even a fan masquerade ball.

Eggers is one of the most-sought after directors in Hollywood at the moment, having earned four Oscar nominations for his remake of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.

In 2017, it was announced that Don’t Breathe and Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez had signed on to lead a sequel, but Alvarez dropped out in 2020.

Later that year, it emerged that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had been enlisted to direct, with original star Jennifer Connelly in conversation to return to her role before exiting in 2023.

It is unclear whether Connelly will be involved in Egger’s adaption at this stage.
