Here’s how you boss penalties in FIFA 17

Never miss a penalty again.

Carl Anka

FIFA 17 is here and it is almost the perfect football game.

Almost.

Thanks to a overhaul of the set piece system, a lot of gamers are having trouble with taking penalties in the new football sim.

The new system removes the power bar, direction and composure metre from previous games to give us a system where the gamer is responsible for the player run up to the penalty.

In theory, the new system should allow players to hit penalties of varying style, using topspin and back spin to strike the ball with greater variety.

In reality… well…

But, it is possible to take penalties like you’re Pirlo; so check our top tips for penalty taking in FIFA 17.

First things first, sort your run up.

Wide Run Up

Ever watch a penalty shoot out and just know when someone’s about to miss? They seem nervous, they stand too close to the ball, they don’t look… about it?

That’s you every time you take a penalty in FIFA 17 without sorting out your run up.

In the new game the run up is responsible for the amount of power and spin you can place on the ball for your penalties. We reckon the new penalty system is 30% run up, 30% placement, 30% power, (the extra 10% is luck), so sort out your run up.

As well as changing the angle you approach the ball by moving the right analogue stick left and right, you can also move to take a longer run up by pulling the stick backwards.

This is really important as a penalty taken with a longer run up generates more power.

Vary your speed

Not only can you change the angle and length of your run up, you can also vary the speed of your penalty run.

Once you’ve given your player the ok to start running with the left stick, you can use the triggers to speed up or slow down how fast they approach the ball.

If you want your player to slow down, hold LT/L2 for the duration of the run up. A quick tap of LT/L2 also makes your player stutter if you want to give the keeper the heebie jeebies.

Now, if you want to speed up your penalty and increase the power with which you strike the ball, hold RT/R2 for your penalty. If you’re the type of person who likes to send penalties down the middle, we reckon you do it with this technique. Catch the keeper napping.

FORTY. FIVE. DEGREES.

Stutter

One of the Dads at JOE has a mantra about penalties, “If you’re a pro and miss the target on a penalty, you should be fined a week’s wages.”

While we’re not that harsh on spot kickers, you have to hit the target with your pens.

You’re able to change the direction of where you want to put the pen with the left stick the entire time your player is doing their run up, but we humbly suggest you pick one direction and stick with it.

Once you do, do not put that left stick further than 45 degrees in the direction you want.

It is very easy to pull your penalty wide with FIFA 17, so if you want to send it left at right, don’t send it more than 45 degrees.

In fact, to be safe, send it 30 degrees. You can stick it in corners by adding more power.

Which brings us to….

One bar from bottom corners, two bars for top

Roofer

At the start of The Journey Mode in FIFA 17, Alex Hunter is playing in an Under-11 Cup Final and has to take a penalty to win the cup.

DO NOT MISS THAT PENALTY. DON’T SHOOT A DAISY CUTTER. GET THE POWER RIGHT ON IT BOY.

If you simply tap the shoot button on your penalties, you won’t generate enough power to send the ball home. For a decent low penalty aim for a little over 1 bar of power with the shoot button.

Like to send your pens top bins aim for just over 2 bars of power.

Anything else and you’re sky it.

Practice

Don’t be like the England national team. Practice your pens. Get a feel for it. Get used to the new system and how you can take a perfect pen, just the way you want it.

Then try it again, so you don’t always send it bottom left every time.

Good luck folks. Happy penalty taking.
