Game of Thrones fans can now actually join the Night’s Watch

Paul Moore

“Night gathers, and now my watch begins…” This sounds class.

Over the course of six seasons, we’ve seen some pretty heinous and memorable scenes from Castle Black.

As Game of Thrones fans will know, only a select few people in Westeros would ever dare to ‘take the black’, but given that the ancient order has defended The Wall for thousands of years, it’s very likely that you could learn a thing or two from these crows.

Ok, let’s think the decision to join the Night’s Watch logically.

Pros: You get to train with swords, wear cool cloaks, battle White Walkers and swear as much as you like.

Cons: You’ll freeze your balls off, the food is crap, you’re not allowed to “take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory”, and to top things off, it’shave very likely that you’ll be killed.

It doesn’t matter what type of crow you are because there’s room for every type of fighter at The Wall.

For example, Maester Aemon took a particular interest in those that value brains over brawn. Contrast this with Ser Alliser Thorne, a man who rallied his fellow crows while defending The Wall from the Wildlings.

It’s just a shame about that whole treason, mutiny and murder plot that he carried out on his Lord Commander, a certain Jon Snow.

Truth be told, we just want to be the person that gets to “drop the scythe!”

Well, if you fancy joining the Night’s Watch, Sky Atlantic have just the thing for you because they’ve launched a competition to find the best crows around.

Aside from winning an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to attend the world premiere of Season 7 – that prize is far too comfortable and warm for ‘real crows’ – there are also several spots in a Night’s Watch training camp, held on May 20 at the Tower of London.

Fans based in the UK and the Republic of Ireland can head find out more details here to be in with a chance of winning. You can apply for a spot in the Night’s Watch training camp by filling out a Training Day form here.

We really hope that the initiation process requires you to recite the oath in full.

You know the words.

“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.”

If you do somehow manage to ‘take the black’, just try to be more like Jon Snow/Sam than Ser Alliser Thorne/Olly.

To be fair, the Night’s Watch really shouldn’t be that picky on applicants, especially since winter is here and the dead come with it.

Best of luck with the application!
