Two years later and we're still talking about that ending...
George R.R. Martin has said that the ending he is planning for the books will be different to the one that fans were treated to in the HBO series.
In an interview with WTTW Chicago, the author of the Song of Ice and Fire novels said that his biggest issue with the epic television series was that it eventually outpaced his progress with the books.
Martin said: "Looking back, I wish I'd stayed ahead of the books.
"My biggest issue there was when they began the [TV] series, I had four books already in print and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011.
"I had a five-book head-start, and these are gigantic books, as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me, but they did. They caught up with me and passed me."
Martin has not released a book in the series since the fifth novel, A Dance with Dragons. However, he has been working on the next instalment for a while no. Whilst he was involved in the development and story of the HBO series, he has admitted that the benefit of the show finishing before his books is that he come up with a different (and god-willing, a better) ending to the tale.
He explained: "That made it a little strange because now the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions.
"So, I’m still working on the book, but you’ll see my ending when that comes out."
But if you're hoping for an alternative to King Bran the Broken, first of his name, then you may be disappointed. The crowning of Bran as Lord of the Six Kingdoms was apparently the idea of Martin himself.
Oh and if you've read this article and are now fuming that I didn't give a spoiler warning, you only have yourself to blame and get zero sympathy from myself. Just don't go googling the Red Wedding...
