Martin Keown has been part of the furniture on Match of the Day since 2007. Nearly 20 years of dissecting defensive mistakes on a Saturday night, and this season he will not be doing it: Keown is one of six pundits dropped from the BBC's flagship highlights show for the 2026/27 campaign, as the Mirror first reported.
Also out are Dion Dublin, a regular analyst since 2012, Shay Given, who arrived in 2018, Stephen Warnock and Nedum Onuoha, who both joined in 2020, and Theo Walcott, who only started appearing in 2024. Four names come in.
Taken together it is the most aggressive reshuffle of the Match of the Day sofa in years, and the timing is the story. The BBC no longer has football punditry to itself: the show's former host now fronts a rival football series on Netflix, and the corporation is trimming programmes elsewhere. Refreshing the biggest football brand it owns looks less like a rota change and more like a defence of it.
Ashley Young, Robbie Keane, Toby Alderweireld and former Brentford and Tottenham manager Thomas Frank will all join the rotating cast of pundits, BBC Sport confirmed. Frank and Young were both part of BBC Sport's World Cup coverage over the summer, which reads less like a coincidence and more like an audition.
The presenting line-up is untouched: Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan remain the main faces. Plenty of familiar analysts survive too, with Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Ellen White, Steph Houghton, Danny Murphy and Ashley Williams all returning as the 2026/27 Premier League season gets under way.
The competitive backdrop is Gary Lineker's Netflix show, The Rest is Football. The Mirror, citing a report in the Sun, says several Match of the Day pundits had considered leaving for it, with Richards and Shearer splitting their time between the two during the World Cup. The BBC has not confirmed any of that and it is worth reading as claim rather than fact — but it explains why a punditry reshuffle is being treated as something bigger than a change of rota.
It also lands against a corporation that has been trimming elsewhere, including the BBC's recent round of cancellations. Refreshing the biggest football brand it owns is a cheaper answer than losing it.
The pundit news came bundled with something more revealing: four new shows on the BBC Football YouTube channel — FANS², The Truth About Football, Golden Goal and Football Hub — plus a BBC Sport Fan Collective bringing together supporters from all 20 Premier League clubs.
Football means something different to every fan, and this season BBC Sport is putting those fans even more firmly at the heart of the game. We're bringing together the unrivalled expertise of former players and managers with the passion, personality and perspectives of supporters.
Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC director of sport
Around it sits the usual heavy schedule: 209 live Premier League commentaries on 5 Live, two FA Cup matches per round, a weekly Bundesliga game on iPlayer, and Kelly Somers' The Football Interview continuing across iPlayer, YouTube and BBC One.
Which brings it back to Keown. His exit after almost two decades is not really a verdict on Keown — it is the clearest sign yet that Match of the Day is no longer just a Saturday night television programme the BBC has to protect, but a brand it now has to defend on a phone screen, against a former host with a streaming deal.
