Deadpool 2 dethrones Infinity War on US box office with $125 million opening

James Dawson

You can’t say this isn’t deserved

Since its release three weeks ago, Avengers: Infinity War has been dominating the US box office but this week, Ryan Reynolds’  NSFW superhero has proven you don’t need to be squeaky clean to smash it in the film charts.

The newly released film took an estimated $125 million at the US box office over the weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which is just a little less than its predecessor movie’s $132.4 million opening.

As well as shooting to the box office top spot, the $53.3 million it is thought to have taken on Friday has claimed the record for the biggest opening day for an R-rated (17 and older) movie.

Compared to its huge takings, Avengers: Infinity War managed just $29 million, although it’s thought to have taken nearly $600 overall.

If you’re yet to see Deadpool 2 or you’re planning to see the film a second time around, there’s an easter egg worth looking out for that one of its writers revealed this week.

The all-digital Juggernaut who makes an appearance in the film, alongside Cable and Domino, is actually played none other than lead-actor Ryan Reynolds – despite being credited as ‘himself’.

Rhett Reese revealed the news to CBR. He said: “Ryan Reynolds ended up voicing Juggernaut, if you didn’t know that.

“That was Ryan’s voice as the Juggernaut, and he did the facial capture for him. I don’t know how they did the physical motion-capture – I don’t think that was Ryan.”
