They’re being sold for more than Oasis tickets
Coldplay fans have been left fuming this morning after presale tickets for the band’s latest concerts sold out and started being resold at astronomical prices.
Only a couple weeks back the band announced a run of gigs in Hull and London with a limited selection of £20 tickets which many people praised.
Notably this came in contrast to Oasis tickets which left thousands fuming when a ticket surge led to prices skyrocketing to £350.
However, now fans of Coldplay are the latest to become victims of ticket touts, seeing presale tickets vanish into thin air as resale tickets appear on third party sites in the hundreds of pounds.
Taking to social media, fans expressed their shock at seeing tickets for the concerts up on Viagogo just minutes after tickets went up on Ticketmaster.
Among these were floor tickets priced from £343 up to £1700 with a host of prices in between.
One fan took to X to express their dismay: “How are we still allowing this to happen? Coldplay this is an absolute joke and completely unfair.”
One commenter put: “Joined the Coldplay presale que. One hour later I have gone from 150K to 138K. Wembley is 90,000 capacity at best! Tickets already for sale on Viagogo for £££££. Buying tickets has been turned into a high stakes, grifting mess.”
Meanwhile, one person wrote: “This is how you know the music industry is completely screwed. Seated tickets are £195 max. Being resold for over £1,200 on Viagogo shameful platform.”
Coldplay were praised by fans after they announced some tickets for their upcoming UK tour will be available for as little as £20.
Over the last few weeks, the subject of ticket prices for major gigs has dominated the news thanks to the Oasis reunion.
There’s been plenty of discussion over what is the right amount to charge for a concert, with controversy about touts and dynamic pricing after tickets for the Oasis gigs next summer went on sale.
All dates for the concerts next summer are now sold out, so if you want to get your hands on a ticket, it will have to be through resale.
Chris Martin and Co will be playing eight dates in Hull and London in August next year to celebrate the release of their new album Moon Music.
For every show on their world tour, the band have released a limited number of Infinity tickets costing the equivalent of £20/$20/€20 to “give fans the chance to attend the Music Of The Spheres World Tour at a super low price.”
The tickets must be bought in pairs and are “randomly allocated anywhere in the venue – from the back row to the floor to the best seat in the house.”
Infinity tickets for the shows at Wembley Stadium and Craven Park will be available via Ticketmaster at 12pm GMT on Friday, November 22.
The scheme has been praised by fans online, with one person writing: “Coldplay doing a limited run of £20 tickets for their upcoming UK shows just proves that bands have a choice to make their gigs more affordable.”
Another agreed, saying: “This is so cool.”
The band have said half the tickets for the Hull dates, on August 18 and 19, will be set aside for local fans, whilst 10 per cent of the proceeds from sales for the UK dates will be donated to Music Venue Trust in support of grassroots venues across the country.
They’ve been praised for this as well, with one person writing on X: “From a musical stand point I’d take an Oasis gig over Coldplay 1000 times over but fair play to Coldplay they’ve shown Oasis up completely in how they’re handling tickets/proceeds from gigs next yr. Giving % to grass roots venues & guaranteeing tickets to locals is great.”
Another said: “So breaking down the #coldplay ticket price, everyone who buys one will be basically buying a grassroots gig ticket… It’s simple but really really clever….”
Tickets for the eight UK dates in Hull and London will go on sale next Thursday (September 26) when a pre-sale opens from 09:00. The general sale will then take place the following day at the same time.
