‘Less is more and for some of our critics, even less would be even more!’
Chris Martin has revealed when Coldplay plan to stop making music and call it a day.
Off the back of their Glastonbury headline set in June – and they’re marathon world tour which will be coming to the UK next summer – Coldplay are releasing their new album, Moon Music, on Friday.
The record will be the band’s 10th studio album, coming more than 14 years after they released their debut album Parachutes in 2000.
But, whilst the band – made up of frontman Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion – show no signs of slowing down at the moment, it seems like they already know when they’ll retire from making music.
And there are two types of people in this world – those of you who read that sentence and feel pangs of sadness, and those of you whose hearts fill with joy.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Martin ‘promised’ the band will only make two more albums after Moon Music.
He said: “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah I promise.
“Because less is more and for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important that we have that limit.”
Explaining the decision to stop at 12, Martin continued: “There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 and a half Beatles albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes.
“Also having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve.”
Whilst the 12th and final will be the end of Coldplay as we know it, the singer didn’t rule out the possibility of some side projects with his bandmates.
Tickets for their UK shows in Hull and London next summer went on sale last week, with huge demand for the dates.
Whilst there weren’t quite the same struggles for fans as for Oasis tickets, many were still left disappointed and some tickets quickly appeared on resale sites for inflated prices.
The band will play at Hull’s Craven Park on August 18 and 19, before playing eight dates at Wembley Stadium on August 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and 31, and September 3 and 4.
