The Sheep Detectives, the 2026 comedy mystery now accessible on Prime Video, is currently the No 1 movie on streaming.
That is according to JustWatch's UK and Ireland Weekly Streaming Charts, which highlight the most popular films and TV shows across all major streaming platforms over the past week (22-28 June, 2026).
Only just released in cinemas in May, the story revolves around George (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can't possibly understand.
"But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realise they must become the detectives," the plot synopsis adds.
"As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers."
Based on the novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, the book was adapted for the screen by writer Craig Mazin (Chornobyl, The Last of Us) and director Kyle Balda (Minions).
Alongside Jackman, the movie's on-screen cast includes Conleth Hill, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, Molly Gordon, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, and Tosin Cole.
Also featuring as the voice of the sheep, meanwhile, are Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Patrick Stewart, Regina Hall, and Rhys Darby.
A surprise hit with critics, The Sheep Detectives holds a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score. Many reviewers praised its funny premise, its family-friendly tone, and its surprisingly emotional story.
You can read a sample of some of these glowing write-ups for the film below:
Arizona Republic: "What a nice surprise The Sheep Detectives is. It’s sweet, and it’s clever and well-acted."
AV Club: "The Sheep Detectives evokes the sunny spirit of classics like Babe while teaching important lessons about death and community. And it contains a wonderful Julia Louis-Dreyfus performance as a smart sheep who discovers she’s got a lot to learn."
IndieWire: If The Sheep Detectives were just a gimmicky movie about a flock solving a human murder, it would still be a relatively fun time. But this little tale has a surprising amount of heart and intelligence."
MovieFreak.com: "Like the great kid films of the 1970s and ‘80s, Mazin isn’t afraid to deal with heady topics like unexpected death, racism, grief, cultural bias, and shortsighted groupthink."
Newsday: "Agatha Christie meets E.B. White in a talking-animal whodunit filled with warm humour and cuddly charm."
Slate: "The movie is endlessly charming and pleasingly clever, as well as surprisingly moving in spots. And, oh yes, it’s about death."
TheWrap: "As cosy farm animal detective stories go, it simply can’t be bleat."
