Judge suspends Britney Spears' father's conservatorship over her

He was appointed her guardian in 2008.

A judge has suspended Britney Spears’ father from the conservatorship he has over her estate, financial and personal affairs.

On Wednesday, a judge removed Jamie Spears from his position as her conservator and handed the role to a man appointed by Spears.

Jamie had filed to end the conservatorship earlier in September after Spears had accused him of years of abuse and requested another guardian.

He had been in control of her life for 13 years after being appointed as her conservator in 2008 amid concerns over the singer’s mental health.

Britney will now be able to chose who takes over her conservatorship. The announcement that her father had been removed from the role was met with celebration from fans around the world, many of whom have been part of the #FreeBritney campaign.

In a court hearing in Los Angeles, Judge Brenda Penny formally ended the conservatorship that the star had with her father, but left in place another conservatorship with an accountant chosen by her legal team, John Zabel.

Britney’s lawyers have requested that another hearing take place in the next 30 to 45 days to decide whether the conservatorship should be ended completely.

In June, Spears took her father to court over the conservatorship, claiming that the arrangement was “abusive” and making a number of accusations against her dad.

She wanted to to charge her father with conservatorship abuse, claiming that Jamie had forced her use medication and birth control to stop her getting pregnant and that he held her in a mental health facility against her will.

Britney was unsuccessful in this case. However in September, her father filed to end the 13-year arrangement.

Her fiance Sam Asghari celebrated Wednesday’s announcement with a post on Instagram.

A source close to the pop star told Page Six that Spears had thought she “would never see the day” that her father’s control over her life was ended.

They said: “Britney burst into tears upon hearing the judge’s decision.

“For the longest time, she had begun to think that she would never see the day that her father’s domineering control over every single aspect of her life would end, but it finally happened.

“She’s in shock and at a loss for words but literally jumping for joy. She hasn’t felt joy like this in 13 years.”
