The Marvel film has smashed yet another record

The Marvel film just became the top-grossing superhero movie of all time in North America

Black Panther, the first blockbuster superhero theatrical release to feature a predominantly black cast, has become the top-grossing superhero movie of all time in North America, surpassing The Avengers which grossed $623.4 million in 2012.

It is now one of only seven films to gross more than $600 million in the American market.

The movie cost $200 million to produce, before marketing costs, and after this weekend is expected to close at an international gross higher than Iron Man 3‘s $1.214 billion. That would make it the third biggest comic book adaptation globally, behind The Avengers ($1.5 billion) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion).

Black Panther is unprecedented in being a marquee cinematic release with close to an all black cast. Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa/Black Panther alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
