Are Manchester United set to upset soap fans tonight?

Simon Lloyd

Manchester United’s kick-off their League Cup campaign at home to Ipswich Town, but there’s a worry that it could cause a very unusual problem.

Although a lower-than-usual attendance is expected at Old Trafford, the fixture could spell bad news for those involved with Coronation Street’s live episode.

The iconic Manchester-based soap recently moved to a new set on the edge of Salford Quays – a 10 minute walk from Old Trafford.

On a match day, it’s not uncommon for goal celebrations to be heard across the surrounding area and with a special live episode scheduled for tonight, there are concerns that the football may interfere with their recording.

A show source told the Daily Mirror:

“No one could believe it when it dawned on them what was happening. There has been a great deal of black humour around the place.”

“Everyone is crossing their fingers and everything else in the hope United do not score in the first half an hour.”

The episode is scheduled to start at just 15 minutes before kick-off. Let’s hope for Corrie fans’ sake, the set is well sound-proofed.
