Rick Grimes is coming back

Andrew Lincoln has told The Associated Press that the first of three The Walking Dead movies is due to start shooting in spring 2021.

The trilogy of films were originally intended to be TV movies, but they will now reportedly come to cinemas.

Production on the films had been delayed due to the Coivd pandemic, but Lincoln told AP that it now looked like it will shoot early next year.

“It does feel like there is a certain sense of positivity and the cavalry’s coming with the vaccines,” he told AP. “And there’s a real sort of sense of a renewal, hopefully.”

Andrew Lincoln played Rick Grimes in the hit AMC zombie show from the very first episode in 2010, until leaving the series in 2018.

It was then announced that Grimes would return for a series of movies. A teaser was shown at San Diego Comic-Con in 219, but it has gone a little quiet since then.

In October, The Walking Dead boss Scott Gimple told Collider that they were still working on the movies, and they were taking the time to get it right.

“We’re following the same general plan but movies take a little longer and we’re playing with it in all sorts of directions,” he said. “And then, the pandemic happened, which gave us the opportunity or the necessity to do that.

“We’re still doing that. Andy is super involved. [Creator Robert Kirkman] is super involved. It really is proceeding. It’s just that current circumstances have given us a little extra time that we seem to need anyways. We really want to do it right.”

“We’ve been working on the script and playing around with different aspects of it, but it’s still fairly early in there.”

Earlier this year it was announced that the main The Walking Dead show was finally coming to the end – but the multiple spin-offs would continue, and even more were in the works.
