Gen Z have been in the news this week thanks to their opinions on movies and TV, but one thing younger members of the demographic may not understand is that people used to listen to music on a device that was not their phones.

Yes, during the noughties iPods were all the rage – before finally being discontinued by Apple last year – and now Urban Outfitters is capitalising on the nostalgia for this era.

First reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, the hipster lifestyle retailer has been selling several different versions of iPods – from classic to mini – for hundreds of dollars each.

But what is particularly distressing for millennials is that when describing these products, Urban Outfitters referred to them as “vintage”.

In fact, one eyebrow-raising listing for a fourth-generation iPod Classic from 2004 called the device a “genuine piece of vintage retro tech,” adding that it is the “perfect blend of new millennium design with modern features”.

The selling of the devices seems to have coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the first iPod’s release date back in 23 October 2001.

But certain people, particularly millennials, have been left disgusted that an iconic item from their youth has already been given the ‘retro’ tag.

However, the Urban Outfitters’ offer seems to have been a big success as searching for iPods on the chain’s website currently yields no results, suggesting all the products sold out.
