Those watching Sunday’s NFL action will be well aware of the sickening leg injury picked up by Zach Miller.

The Chicago Bears tight end landed awkwardly after appearing to score a touchdown for his side in their defeat at New Orleans Saints, with footage of his left knee bending the wrong way making it instantly clear that the injury was a very serious one.

Although it was soon revealed that Miller had dislocated the knee joint, sources told ESPN‘s Chris Mortensen that he underwent emergency surgery on Sunday evening in an attempt to save his injured leg.

The 33-year-old is now known to have torn his popliteal artery in the incident, requiring vascular surgeons to graft tissue from his right leg in an attempt to repair it.

Miller had been treated for several minutes on the field after the injury, before eventually being taken to hospital.

Bears head coach John Fox appeared cautiously optimistic about Miller when speaking on Monday.

“He is not out of the woods, but he is as good as he can be at this stage,” she said.

“He’s got a good pulse in his lower leg and good feeling in his foot, ” he added.

Asked if Miller is there was still a danger of him losing his leg, Fox said: “I am not a doctor, but I feel good about where he is right now.”
