WATCH: World Cup final interrupted by pitch invasion

Simon Lloyd

Sunday’s World Cup final between Croatia and France was interrupted by a pitch invasion

Shortly after half-time, with France leading 2-1, several people evaded stewards at the Luzhniki Stadium to make their way onto the field of play, enough for the game to be paused for a short while.

As is usually the case, cameras covering the game did not focus on the pitch invaders, although footage uploaded to Twitter by ITV Sport’s Jacqui Oatley shows security attempting to escort as many as four individuals off the pitch.

Although some on social media have claimed the pitch invasion to be some form of protest, it’s not clear at the time of writing what the intentions of those involved were.

The game resumed soon after, with Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe scoring France’s third and fourth goals of the afternoon to put Didier Deschamps’ men in a commanding position.

Russian activists Pussy Riot have claimed responsibility for the incident.
