You can say what you like about Louis van Gaal, but you’ve got to admire the man’s honesty.

He rarely shirks a question and nearly always gives a straight – sometimes blunt – answer.

Take this exchange with a Man United supporter. Whilst signing autographs outside Old Trafford, Van Gaal is asked who is the best player he has ever coached.

Other managers would have been tempted to straight-bat the query for fear of annoying anyone, or perhaps name a current player to bolster morale.

Not Louis. His response is honest and frank. Although it’s perhaps something of a surprise that he didn’t plump for Xavi or Thomas Muller or maybe even Bastian Schweinsteiger…

The Man United boss confirms it be Luis Figo, whom he managed during his first stint at Barcelona between 1997 and 2000. The Portuguese won the Ballon d’Or in their final year together.

The same supporter also drew a wide grin from Van Gaal when referring to new boy Anthony Martial’s dream debut for the club…
