Benjamin Mendy is absolutely adored at the Etihad

Despite today being only his fifth Premier League game for Manchester City, Benjamin Mendy is a crowd favourite at the Etihad.

He ruptured his knee ligaments back in September and during his time on the sidelines, he’s been vocal with his support for City on social media. He also engages in a lot of light-hearted jokes with the fans. Mendy coined the whole #SharkTeam thing that took off and led to some City fans turning up to games wearing inflatable shark heads.

Today, he made his return from injury, just in time to join in on the celebrations. Celebrations that included people clapping their hands, stomping their feet, and shouting hooray!

In truth, he looked rusty, but that is to be expected of a player who has missed so much of the season. And if you’re going to perform below par, today was the day to do it, when the league is already wrapped up and you have a 5 goal cushion.

When the final whistle went, as they did in 2012, City fans invaded the pitch and mobbed the players. But Mendy got the most attention, despite contributing the least out of all the players to this season’s title win.

His social media activity has earned him hero status among young City fans, as it was clear to see by the way he got mobbed after the final whistle today.

Hopefully, next season he will who why he can be great on the pitch as well as off it.
