Video: Sam Allardyce reveals how close he was to England job and talks United dream

JOE

He probably would’ve got it if his name was Allardici.

You could maybe say close call but considering Steve McClaren beat him to the post, we’re not sure if England really were better off.

But the disappointment of missing out on the national job still irks big Sam and no dossier is going to make him feel any better.

The West Ham boss appeared on The Clare Balding Show to discuss all-things-football – well, about as much football as you could discuss with Allardyce – and he revealed how it was “touch and go” between him and McClaren for the England position back in 2006.

But, fear not, he still has another dream yet to realise.

He wants to one day manage Manchester United. That’s right, Manchester United.

It must’ve been all those long passes that made him realise he could do it, too.
