UEFA ruling means the Sun can cover Liverpool and Everton European games next season

This won't go down well on Merseyside

Despite being banned by both Liverpool and Everton, The Sun newspaper will reportedly be able to cover European games involving the pair next season.

Earlier this year, Liverpool banned The Sun over their infamous coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 of the club’s supporters were unlawfully killed in 1989.

Four days after the tragedy, the newspaper ran a story, which has now been established to have been false, under the headline “The Truth.”

Everton banned The Sun following Kelvin MacKenzie’s column about Ross Barkley. The former editor of the newspaper compared the Everton midfielder to a gorilla.

Barkley’s grandfather is from Nigeria, a fact MacKenzie claimed not to have known when he wrote the column.

Everton then banned the newspaper from their premises. However, the newspaper could find a way around the ban by both clubs.

According to the Independent, journalists from The Sun will be allowed to attend European games at Liverpool and Everton.

Uefa is responsible for matchday accreditation for the Champions League and Europa League. According to the Independent, they will approve any accreditation requests from The Sun for European games next season.

Liverpool are third in the Premier League with five games to play. While Everton are in seventh, two points off a European spot, with four games to go.
