Tyson Fury’s remarkable comeback journey has been the stuff of dreams and he wants his rematch with Deontay Wilder to take place at the Theatre of Dreams
Fury can feel hard done by after being denied a victory in his WBC heavyweight title fight against Wilder on Saturday night.
The judges’ decision of a split draw was met with a chorus of boos in Los Angeles’ Staples Centre because of the success Fury enjoyed in the early stages of the bout.
Two Wilder knockdowns in the second half of the contest, the second of which tested Fury’s mettle as he was forced to return from near-unconsciousness, made the wait for the judges’ scorecards all the more nerve-wracking for ‘The Gypsy King’.
With uncertainty remaining over Anthony Joshua’s willingness to fight either Fury or Wilder, all signs are pointing to an immediate rematch.
Speaking in the post-fight press conference, promoter Frank Warren said: “From my perspective, I’d love to have a rematch and I’d like to see it in the UK. We could fill a football stadium up, maybe Wembley or Arsenal or any one of those big stadiums.”
That prompted a loud interruption from Fury who shouted: “Old Trafford, come on Frank!”
Fury, a lifelong Manchester United fan, has only fought once in England in the past four years and his team feels like he has done enough to warrant a fight close to home.
Warren continued: “I thought Tyson won it and won it well, whatever the result of the fight. It was a fight that you’d want to see again, irrespective of whether it was a draw or whoever won the fight.
“It’s one of those fights that you want to see again and we want to do it again but we want it in the UK. That’s where the next one should be.
“Tyson came here to Los Angeles, he’s travelled to Germany to Wladimir Klitschko’s back yard. Now let’s let him have some home turf because on home turf, he would have won that fight.”
