Having finally made it back to the Champions League, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will go no further than the group stages of the competition as defeat away at Monaco saw them crash out.
Having already lost at home Wembley to the same side in September, Spurs only win in the competition came against CSKA Moscow in their second match. Games against Bayer Leverkusen saw them pick up a point away from home and lose again in the return, meaning Tuesday’s result was crucial.
A win was needed, but with minutes to go, Spurs found themselves 2-1 down. Hopes of repeating the kind of late comeback they produced against West Ham at the weekend were fading fast when the ball arrived at the feet of Vincent Janssen.
Harry Kane flicked the ball on for the Dutchman, who found himself thirty yards out with his back to goal. Turning quickly, Janssen unleashed a powerful strike with his left foot, which sailed so high over the bar that it was more of a threat to the windows of the yachts docked in Monte Carlo’s harbour than it was to the Monaco goal.
Seriously though, look how high that ball is having only just left his foot…
