Tottenham announce details of new stadium Test Event matches

Finally, Spurs fans – some good news on the new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur have announced details for two Test Event matches at the club’s new stadium.

The north London club’s move to their new home was delayed over safety concerns earlier this season, meaning the club have continued to play their home fixtures at Wembley, where they moved to from White Hart Lane at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

To achieve a formal safety certificate for fixtures to be held at the new stadium, Spurs are required to hold two Test Event matches. These have now been confirmed by a statement, which also provided information about the first game the club’s first team are likely to play in the stadium.

The first game will see Spurs’ Under-18s take on Southampton at 3pm on Sunday 24 March, with a capacity of around 30,000. This will be followed by a specially organised Tottenham Hotspur Legends match, kicking off at 5.30pm on Saturday 30 March. This game will be played in front of 45,000 fans.

Tickets for both of these games will be available to supporters via a ballot process, details of which can be found in the statement.

Should the club be granted its safety certificates after these games, their first home game could be the league game against Brighton which is currently scheduled for April 7. This, however, may change due to Brighton’s involvement in the FA Cup and Uefa’s Champions League schedule.

The update from Spurs follows reports earlier in the day that their new stadium was set to be named ‘Nike Stadium’. Richard Keys, the former Sky Sports presenter, had ‘exclusively’ revealed the development, only for Spurs to flatly deny the claims later in the day.
