John Stones is one of the most expensive defenders in world football but he’s not forgotten where he came from.
Stones was just a kid when Glenn Hoddle was in charge of the England team but he clearly has a lot of respect for the former Three Lions manager.
After England’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Colombia on Tuesday night, Stones made a point of approaching Hoddle for a friendly chat.
The Manchester City centre-half jogged over to Hoddle, who was waiting near the corner flag, and politely introduced himself for the first time.
“I’ve never had chance to meet you in person,” Stones said. “Absolute pleasure.”

Stones played the full 120 minutes and didn’t take one of the five penalties, however it looked like he enjoyed the shootout more than anyone in the Spartak Stadium.
The 24-year-old made a point of displaying his passion to the Colombian players on the halfway line after a tempestuous match.
Stones has played a crucial role in Gareth Southgate’s team throughout the tournament and is expected to start yet again in the three-man defence for Saturday’s quarter-final clash with Sweden.
The defender has been one of England’s top performers in Russia and admirably dealt with the threat of Radamel Falcao throughout the Round of 16 tie.
And he also seems to be a lovely lad who hasn’t allowed celebrity to affect his manners.
