Placed in 18th in the Premier League with just two matches left, the Irons are staring at a potential relegation to the Championship.

Though many fans and neutrals may be looking forward to a reunion with old rivals Millwall, there is a reason that others will want the Hammers to maintain their place in the Premier League.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Khan gave the reason: “What I'd say to Londoners who don't support Spurs is you should probably be cheering on West Ham.”

"The previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, did the worst deal that can be imaginable,” he added.

"As far as West Ham are concerned, as a deal of the century where he basically gave them rent free, this amazing stadium for 100 years.

"Now if West Ham are relegated, we, the taxpayers, we City Hall, could lose up to 2.5m a year.

“So what I say to Londoners who don't support Spurs is you should probably be cheering on West Ham, because the taxpayer will lose out if West Ham go down."

With a 99-year lease signed by the former mayor Johnson, West Ham pay £4.4m in rent, with the GLA paying the costs for stewarding and other costs associated with running the stadium.
