The Premier League rule changes fans need to know before new season

The season is just a week away and there are new rules!

On Saturday, play-off winners Hull City then take on Man United, before an action-packed day of fixtures.

Before commencing though, let's take a look at all the changes implemented by the league.

Transfer restrictions

Every team is able to register 25 players for the league. Eight players must be homegrown, whereas 17 can be non-homegrown. Player under the age of 21 do not count towards this.

Homegrown players are defined as:  "irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)."

VAR

Video Assistant Referee will still operate by the 'clear and obvious error' principle before a decision is made on a review.

This campaign though, the Premier League will also be introducing a VAR review where second yellow cards are awarded to a player resulting in a red card. This will only occur when the second yellow card is given, in comparison to whether one should be awarded or not.

Hair-pulling

The Premier League has offered an explanation on the rules after Lisandro Martinez was handed a three-match ban for hair pulling on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It's understood that now a red card will be issued should a player make a 'clear and deliberate action' to pull an opponent's hair with 'excessive force and/or brutality'.

A yellow card will instead be issued if the player doesn't use 'excessive force and/or brutality'.

Financial rule changes

 Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) will be replaced with Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience (SSR).

SCR limits Premier League clubs' on-the-field spending to 85% of their football relative revenue and net loss/profit from player sales.

It's introduced in line with UEFA regulation, in order to make the process clearer.

It's understood that for clubs in UEFA competitions, spending is capped at 70% of revenue.

Injuries

Players previously had to leave the field for 30 seconds after receiving treatment due to an injury. It has now been increased to one minute.
