Steven Gerrard: “I wish that I committed more in the classroom”

Steven Gerrard has opened up about his education, admitting he wishes he had better qualifications and that he had learned a second language.

The former Liverpool captain made the admission when speaking to youth players at his current club, LA Galaxy. "From a football point of view, I’ve got no regrets … but I do actually wish that I committed more in the classroom," the 35-year-old said. "I wish my qualifications were better. I wish I had another language to speak. When I think of education, I never put enough in, and that's a regret I have." A large number of young players in MLS arrive in the league after going through the college system, and many will be able to put degrees to good use after retirement. "It's a cruel thing to say, but not everyone who tries to be a professional footballer makes it, so it's important that you concentrate and give everything in your schoolwork as well," said Gerrard. "Because if it doesn't happen you've got something healthy to fall back on."
