Stats suggest Team GB will win half as many golds at Rio Olympics

Team GB will go into the 2016 Olympic Games with a tall order to replicate the success they enjoyed on home soil four years ago.

Back in 2012, Great Britain earned 29 gold medals, 17 silvers and 19 bronzes to end the London games third in the medal table. But the stats are against the British sportsmen and women travelling to Brazil, with stats from bettingexpert showing a significant drop off when a previous host nation takes part in the Olympics four years later. Looking back at the modern era, the sports betting social network has found that - on average - host nations win 52% fewer golds, 28% fewer silvers and 18% fewer bronze medals, leading to the following totals. The likely drop-off is not the only thing that pre-Rio studies have discovered, however. The balance was restored somewhat in 2012, with 11 of the 29 British golds going to individual women or teams containing at least one woman.
