Palmer's deflected free-kick was the difference between the two sides as James Trafford's stoppage time penalty save ensured Lee Carsley's men would lift the trophy in Georgia.

It was the first time England had won the trophy in 39 years and they did so in stylish fashion, not conceding a goal throughout the entirety of the tournament.

Tempers flared between the two nations after Palmer's goal as Spain became disgruntled with England's exuberant celebrations, prompting backroom staff to intervene and cool individuals down.

England coach Ashley Cole was sent off in the first half for his role in the altercation that followed the Three Lions' opener.

After the game, Gomez aired his frustrations at the fact that Palmer hadn't come over to apologise at the full time whistle.

Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, he said: "It surprised me. "He [Palmer] didn’t want to apologise or anything like some of his other teammates.

"I don’t know, I would have celebrated it in a different way and my teammates would have done it in a different way as well.

"We have tried to represent our country in the best possible way and have the utmost respect for all our rivals.

"They wanted to celebrate it like this and also after the missed penalty."

Palmer meanwhile admitted that he may haver overdone it on the celebrations but wanted to celebrate an important win.

"I was a bit frustrated because the game, well, the way they were going down and screaming and stuff," he explained. "So obviously when I scored, I just, the celebration might have been a bit over-the-top, but I'm just happy."
