When discussing Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon on The Overlap, he said: “He’s gone to club that have won nothing in 50 years, lads.”
Sunderland-born Jill Scott admitted: “He has had a good season though, it’s been a good move.”
Ian Wright defended the England international: “Anthony Gordon is doing something else to take him to the next level. This is what I like about him. He recognised that he had to go to Newcastle as soon as the offer came up
“If you look at where Everton are going, he’s made the right decision. He’s on that road (to success) and he’s seen it.”
The conversation came after Gary Neville’s Overlap interview with the former Everton man this week. The winger discussed how he prepared for games using visualisation to familiarise himself with scenarios that may happen on matchday.
Neville reiterated his admiration for Gordon and his level of maturity for a player still finding his feet in the game despite a big-money move last summer.
Gordon has hit career-high numbers this season; registering 10 goals and eight assists, but credited his success to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
“Every session, if you’re daydreaming for one second, he’s somehow managed to see it and he’s screaming your name. Eddie’s culture is much harder than what it was like when I first went to the England camp, but it’s got me to where I am now which is a good thing."
He continued expressing his ambition to represent England at this summer’s European Championsips in Germany.
“I think versatility in a tournament is massive. The likes of Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish can play across the front line and in midfield, but I feel that I’ve done it a lot this season, especially in big games, and I think that matters. I’ve played out of position in big games and done well, so I think that matters.
“Playing as a centre forward or as a right-winger is out of position for me because the left is probably my main position. I’ve played number 10 at times, and I’ve proven in big games that no matter where I play, I can still perform, and having that trust from the manager and the players around me, which I think is the most important thing."
