Roy Keane brands Kyle Walker “an idiot” after giving away penalty

Tell us what you really think, Roy

Roy Keane delivered a typically blunt assessment when asked how Sadio Mane earned Liverpool a penalty in their Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

With the scores goalless at the time, Mane had been taken down by Kyle Walker with little over ten minutes played at The Etihad. There were few complaints, and Mo Salah soon stepped up to give Jurgen Klopp’s side an early lead.

Asked how Mane had won the spot-kick during Sky’s half-time analysis, Keane replied (somewhat hilariously): “Because he’s up against an idiot. Kyle Walker, people tell me he’s playing well. I don’t think so. I think this guy is 30 years of age, he’s an international, and he’s a car crash. He keeps making these kinds of mistakes and is rightly punished for it.”

Micah Richards played down Keane’s comments soon after, suggesting the former Manchester United skipper had been unfair in his appraisal of the England full-back.

“He’s been in good form,” Richards said. “I think Roy’s going a bit overboard there. He’s been one of City’s best players, but yeah, he gambles there on Mane. He should’ve just waited. He gambled he was going outside and before you know it, Mane was there.”

City had gone into the break level after an equaliser from Gabriel Jesus. They might have gone one better had Kevin De Bruyne tucked away a penalty of his own shortly before the interval. To the surprise of everyone watching, the Belgian missed the target entirely as he dragged his shot wide of the left post.
