Romario’s list of the five best footballers of all-time is typically self-centered

Kevin McGillicuddy

Self-praise is no praise.

But if you are Romario, World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994, and scorer of hundreds, if not thousands of goals, well that’s all bullsh*t.

The ex-Barcelona striker was one of the very best forwards of his generation, and befitting his ego, and his enormous sense of self-regard, it should not surprise anyone who he has rated among the five best players of all time.

Forget any players still actually playing, or the last two men to contest the Ballon d’Or, instead, Romario feels that he ranks only behind Pele as the best player ever to grace the planet.

In an interview in his native Brazil, the striker rates himself as better than Maradona, while his top five are made up of the original Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.

However it is his reason for including himself that really makes sure the man has no equal in world football when it comes to inflating his own ego.

“I think I deserve to be on the list for my height, for the things that I did, for not being an athlete and to get where I got.”

If not being an athlete makes him among the best players in the world, then someone really needs to tell Cristiano Ronaldo to take it easy on the sit-ups.

And being vertically challenged should give Lionel Messi a free pass to the top-five.
