However, after taking the lead, the Blues conceded a bizarre equaliser as defender James passed the ball into the back of his own net.
A Twitter user posted a clip of the comical own goal with the caption: "Reece James Own Goal vs Club America wtf is this." https://twitter.com/lmm01525586/status/1548508385200394240 The video shows Chelsea regaining possession from an opposition player, before Mount passes the ball to England teammate James, who was standing roughly on the corner of the penalty area. However, James was quickly closed down by an opponent, which forced him to pass the ball back to third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. The pair weren't on the same wavelength, though, as the ball trickled past the stricken Bettinelli and into an empty net.
One user - a Liverpool fan - wrote: "Reece James tried to pass like Trent and ended up scoring in his own goal", alongside two sarcastic crying emojis.

Chelsea fans hide please." https://twitter.com/Kiswili_10/status/1548508812906209280 A third wrote: "Rival fans are gonna run an agenda about the own goal, however what they won’t tell you is the involvement Reece James had in both the goals, great control & cross to Timo for the first & a great switch to Alonso which sets up the 2nd, good thing we won". https://twitter.com/Bobosilver1/status/1548518746016268289 Another said: "I woke up early as possible to see reece james scoring own goal." https://twitter.com/lhip_tea/status/1548521311814578176 A fifth wrote: "Heard that Reece James scored an own goal... we’re so clear". https://twitter.com/Kieran_MCFC_/status/1548602359974076416 Chelsea will now face off against Charlotte FC and Arsenal before returning to London next Sunday.
